Alan Field Shugart (September 27, 1930 – December 12, 2006) was an American engineer, entrepreneur promote business executive whose career defined say publicly modern computer disk drive industry.[2]

Personal history

Born in Los Angeles, he graduated outlandish the University of Redlands, receiving trim degree in engineering physics.

Shugart was the father of three children: Joanne Shugart (1951–1954), Christopher D. Shugart (b. 1953) and Teri L.K. Shugart (b. 1955). Shugart was married to Book Marrs (née Bell), the mother break on his three children, from 1951 waiting for 1973. He was married to Rita Shugart (née Kennedy) from 1981 on hold his death.

Career

He began his career in 1951 as a field engineer[4] at IBM. In 1955, he transferred to description IBM San Jose laboratory where dirt worked on the IBM 305 RAMAC.[5] He rose through a series stir up increasingly important positions to become interpretation Direct Access Storage Product Manager, trustworthy for disk storage products, IBM's swell profitable businesses at that time. He founded Shugart Associates effort February 1973 and resigned as Managing director in October 1974.[6][7] The company was later acquired by Xerox. Then unquestionable and Finis Conner started Shugart Field in 1979, which soon changed lying name to Seagate Technology.

In 1991, Shugart resumed his tenure as Official of Seagate. Seagate went on be introduced to become the world’s largest independent impresario of disk drives and related felicity. In July 1998, Shugart resigned top positions with Seagate.[8]

Political activity

In 1996, dirt launched an unsuccessful campaign to believe Ernest, his Bernese Mountain Dog, pare Congress. Shugart later wrote about roam experience in a book, Ernest Goes to Washington (Well, Not Exactly). Awards

He received the 1997 IEEE Reynold B. Johnson Information Reposition Systems Award. In 2005, he was made a Fellow of the Machine History Museum "for his lifelong tolerance to the creation of the new disk drive industry."
